National Tofu Day

This tasty meat alternative has many uses: as a meat alternative (obviously) for vegans, to make delicious desserts like almond tofu, and an alternative for people who can’t afford meat – which is why it was designed.

The Riveting History

  • 179 BCE: The Han Dynasty creates Tofu as an affordable alternative to people who can’t afford meat.
  • 700 CE: The Japanese adopt tofu and perfect the creation technique.
  • 1975: ‘The Book of Tofu’ is published, introducing tofu to the West and promoting vegetarianism and veganism.
  • 2014: the very first National Tofu Day is celebrated.

Almond Tofu Recipe

  • ½ cup water
  • 1½ unsweetened soy milk
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 tsp almond extract

  1. Dissolve agar powder into water.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat soy milk and sugar to just before boiling.
  3. Add the dissolved agar powder to the milk and sugar mixture and stir until completely mixed.
  4. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the almond extract. Cool for 5 minutes.
  5. Pour into a heatproof dish and refrigerate until set (about 2 hours).
  6. Cut into cubes and serve with fresh or canned fruit.
