As the new year starts, it’s enticing to want to reinvent yourself, and that includes your wardrobe. It’s fun and it’s exciting, but can be a daunting task if you don’t know how to start. There’s no need to get discouraged, there are plenty of different ways you can revamp your closet that aren’t complicated and won’t break the bank.
When you start out in fashion, one of the most important things to remember is to USE WHAT YOU OWN. I know it may be tempting to go out and buy an entire new wardrobe, but not only is that really expensive, it’s also wasteful to the clothes you already have. Instead, play around with styling, and this can be simple things like wearing your shirt tied or tucking a dress into a pair of pants to get a new top. There are some amazing tutorials online that show you how to wear different garments in all sorts of creative ways! When I first started in my fashion journey, I fell in love with Bestdressed on Youtube and I recommend her videos to anyone with
a more feminine style.
You can also go the extra mile and get crafty with it! Now don’t get overwhelmed, it is not as difficult as it may seem. Even if you’ve never touched a sewing machine, you can still alter your clothes! Some easy DIYs you can do with no experience are using dye (make sure you’re using the right type for your fabric!) and cutting up your clothes. I love cutting off the neckline of my shirts for an off the shoulder look and turning jeans into shorts, but there are tons of unique cuts and designs that you can try out! From trimming a shirt into a crop top to making halter tops, there’s a ton of options to choose from that can switch up your style.
Now, if you are more experienced with crafting, then a whole world opens up. One of my favorite things to do is make patches out of old fabric, typically from jeans that I cut into shorts, but you can really use anything. You can draw on these patches with paint, use different fabric scraps to make different designs, or just have some splashes of colors on a garment. Of course, tailoring is always a good option too. Taking things in to fit better, adding panels to get a looser effect, or sewing a nice fringe are all great and easy ways to transform clothes you already have!
But, if you have the need to buy new clothes (trust me, I get it), I would recommend starting with thrift stores. There are a bunch of great thrift stores around Corpus that offer great clothing at affordable prices, but even if you can’t shop locally, it’s never a bad idea to hit up one of the many Goodwills around town.
No matter how you choose to change up your wardrobe this year, it’s key to remember that fashion is about fun, experimentation, and expressing yourself. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to look a certain way, just do what you love!
