This past Saturday, the RHS Band competed at the annual Region 14 UIL Marching Contest, hosted at Gregory-Portland’s Roy Atkins Stadium. Judges awarded the band Division I ratings across the board, earning them sweepstakes awards.

With these scores, the RHS Band advances to the Area H Marching Contest, joining just two other CCISD schools in the competition.

Composed by MJM Works and Ben Hylton, RHS’s show “That’s A Stretch” is a testament to self-discovery and confidence. The show contains music by Sia, Billie Eilish, Franz Liszt, and Johannes Brahms.

This triumph follows the shocking upset at last year’s region contest, where the band’s ratings fell unexpectedly short.

“We deserved a 1 last year,” former clarinet section leader Eva Luna reflected. “All the (band directors) were texting Mr. H.”

Last year’s show, “My Immortal Beloved,” by Jordan Stern, featured music from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and Moonlight Sonata, along with several songs from the alternative rock band Evanescence. The show merged romantic themes from Evanescence’s song “My Immortal” and a passionate love letter written by Beethoven addressed to his “Immortal Beloved.”

Members are hopeful for another standout performance in November. With two weeks to prepare, the RHS Band is giving it their all in hopes of earning a ticket to UIL State.

The UIL Area H 5A Marching Band Contest will be held at the D.W. Rutledge Stadium in Converse, Texas, on November 1. RHS will be performing at 12:45 p.m.
