As a dedicated film nerd, I have been on the edge of my seat waiting for these Oscars nominations. Except I’m not that dedicated and I had to watch all of the movies before forming a concrete opinion. Now that I have, though, I can finally give my long-awaited, unbiased, incredibly credible predictions (for a few categories, at least):
Best Picture
Nominees: Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Perez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, The Substance, Wicked
My Prediction: Anora
Who I Want To Win: Anora, The Substance
Who I DON’T Want To Win: Wicked, Emilia Perez, The Brutalist
Anora is just an absolutely beautiful film and I think it’s the best film of 2024. The Substance is also a beautiful film and is a close second for my best films of 2024 ranking—this is Demi Moore’s best acting in any of her films to date and it also managed to completely change my mind about Margaret Qualley.
The Substance also has amazing symbolic cinematography and its winning Best Picture would be a huge step in horror cinema, as horror films rarely win big at the Oscars.
Wicked, unfortunately, I didn’t like. In my opinion, the pacing was poor—in the cinema, I found myself on my phone for most of the movie—however, I think Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s performances were amazing in the roles. I think Wicked’s sequel will have an amazing chance at winning Best Picture at the 2025 Oscars.
Me hating Emilia Perez is going to be a common theme in this rant.
It is a terrible movie and I don’t know how it even got this far. Karla Sofia Gascon, who plays the titular character, is a terrible person and her performance is shallow, the director didn’t bother to do any research on the topics he was trying to “shed light” on, the movie used AI to enhance Gascon’s voice, the list could go on. I really hate Emilia Perez
I liked The Brutalist at first. Sure, it was long (like really long.. like 3 and a half hours long..) but I liked the messaging behind it and the cinematography. However, it was recently shared that the producers used AI to tweak a few actors’ accents and voices. I and many critics share the same opinion: if a film uses AI, it should be disqualified from awards. That’s all.
Best Actor
Nominees: Adrien Brody, Timothee Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes, Sebastian Stan
My Prediction: Adrien Brody
Who I Want To Win: Sebastian Stan, Timothee Chalamet
Adrien Brody is the favorite as of right now for The Brutalist and he deserves it. Brody won the Golden Globes and has been met with critical acclaim for his performance as Laszlo Toth. I’m still salty about the AI thing though. Timothee Chalamet plays a young Bob Dylan in his movie and even went to method acting for the role. I want him to win so he can be the youngest person to win Best Actor.
Sebastien Stan is nominated for his role in The Apprentice, a Donald Trump biopic, which I know he won’t win. The Apprentice is so underrated and I hope at least getting nominated brings more attention to it because I love it with all of my heart.
Best Actress
Nominees: Cynthia Erivo, Karla Sofia Gascon, Mikey Madison, Demi Moore, Fernanda Torres
My Prediction: Demi Moore
Who I Want To Win: Mikey Madison, Demi Moore
Who I DON’T Want To Win: Karla Sofia Gascon, Cynthia Erivo
Again, Demi Moore in The Substance was the best I’ve ever seen Demi Moore in her entire life. Need I say more? Moore has also never been truly recognized for her acting in her decades-long career until she took home the Golden Globe. She deserves it more than anyone.
Mikey Madison as Anora was amazing. She really brought depth and connection to the character and I think she’ll get her chance at a lot more Oscars in the future.
A few weeks ago, a few racist and controversial statements Karla Sofia Gascon made resurfaced and were publicized for all to see. Read those for yourself, she doesn’t deserve the Oscar.
Cynthia Erivo deserves an Oscar. I’m putting it out there. But she’ll get it at next year’s awards. This is Demi’s year.
I’m skipping Best Supporting Actor/Actress out of boredom.
Best Original Score
Nominees: The Brutalist, Conclave, Emilia Perez, Wicked, The Wild Robot
My Prediction: Wicked
Who I Want To Win: Challengers
Challengers was absolutely robbed of the Original Score nomination. The fact that
Guadagnino’s masterpiece was literally snubbed of every single award in favor of Emilia Perez
will forever astound me. Listen to any scene and you’ll know what I mean.
Best Cinematography
Nominees: The Brutalist, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Perez, Maria, Nosferatu
My Prediction: Dune: Part Two
Who I Want To Win: Nosferatu
Nosferatu needed more nominations but I swear it has this one in the bag.
Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Nominees: A Different Man, Emilia Perez, Nosferatu, The Substance, Wicked
My Prediction: Nosferatu
Who I Want To Win: Nosferatu
I was told Nosferatu wouldn’t win because Elphaba is literally green. He’s literally decomposing? He’s wrinkling? I couldn’t tell that it was Bill Skarsgard? He was literally scared of himself?
I’m too tired to do any more and those are the only categories I really care about so those are my Oscars predictions! When the results are out I will make a part 2 where I rant about whether or not I’m satisfied or not.
