This past Friday, January 24, W.B. Ray High School hosted the Regional Academic Decathlon Meet and won first-place. Our school provided the venue and facilities for the regional tournament which included 24 teams in total.
Academic Decathlon consists of several events in Academics, such as public speaking, Interviewing, Tests of Knowledge, and Super Quiz. Academic Decathlon pushes students to become more knowledgeable and to develop more skills applicable to the real world. At Ray, AcaDeca is sponsored by Mrs. Hamilton. Ray will be moving on to the Frisco state meet as the second highest scoring medium school in the Corpus Christi area.
Many students also showed their school spirit by showing up to volunteer in numerous positions. Some positions include time keepers, who provide time signals for the speaking competitors, way finders, who guide teams, coaches, and judges around the school, and runners, who help with any needed tasks and are ready to help address any possible encountered issues. These students showed up to help the tournament run smoothly and were coordinated by Ms. Barrera, the sponsor of National Honor Society.
The members of the Ray team are: Vera Hsiang, Corpitos Rios, Nathan Arias-Jara, Daniel Lee, Marshall Rose, Benjamin Thompson, Alyssa Arriaga, Jaden Mendoza, and Unal McLaughlan.
