Traditionally held in February, the Favorites Dance has been organized and funded by the Student Council each year. Despite being one of the most prominent student organizations, the council has faced repeated financial setbacks due to the event’s poor turnout. This trend has persisted for several years and is not unique to W.B. Ray. For example, Mary Carroll High School recently canceled their own Favorites Dance under similar circumstances.
The likely decision to cancel the dance has sparked complaints from a very small but vocal group of students, most of whom are not members of Student Council. They argue that canceling the event could negatively impact their “high school experience.”
However, the Student Council argues that placing the overwhelming majority of the responsibility both in terms of event setup and financial losses on their organization is unfair. With attendance numbers consistently failing to justify the costs, the Favorites Dance has become unsustainable for a student-run group.
To gauge student interest, the Texan Times has released a survey. Students are encouraged to participate. You can vote on it here.
