TikTok, an app released in 2016, has since become a staple of the social media entertainment industry, but as of January 19th of this year, TikTok is going to be banned. This ban is happening because China, a country deemed a threat toward the United States’ national security, is operating the app. Many people are enraged about this recent development, and aren’t giving up their search for another app to replace TikTok.
What’s Next?
Ironically, Americans have found another Chinese app called RedNote. According to NPR, media outlets have confirmed that over 700,000 new users have joined the app in only two days. The Americans new to the app are known as “TikTok Refugees,” and even formed a club on the platform with over 100,000 members. The hashtag “TikTok refugee” has already gotten 250 million views and 5.5 million comments, showing that many American users have downloaded this app to combat the TikTok ban.
The Interaction Between the Two Countries
Chinese users have informed newcomers that they don’t want to bring politics into the app; they just want to have fun and enjoy their time there, but they are also excited to have these instant changes. Both Chinese and American users have never been able to interact with ordinary people from different countries, and are having a good time engaging with each other, even if they aren’t able to clearly communicate with one another, showing that Rednote might become an important part in improving the relations between our two nations.
