Starting out in fashion can be difficult, especially if you have no place to start. That’s where the role of fashion inspiration comes in. Having pictures and people to base your outfits on is incredibly helpful when starting to get into fashion and is the first step to developing your personal style.
As an example, I’ve found myself drawn to the 50s, 80s, and 90s. I love the high-waisted, tight silhouettes and full skirts of the 50s, the relaxed silhouettes of the 80s with the slouchy sweaters and light-colored jeans, and the alternative fashion in the 90s that follow the grunge and punk subculture. There are also many people that I like to take after, the most predominant are Fran Fine from The Nanny and Fleabag from the show Fleabag.

Both characters wear more high-waisted pants and skirts, the difference between these characters is eccentrism. Fran Fine, being a sitcom character, wears bright and bold patterns and colors, being “the lady in red when everyone else is wearing tan.” Fleabag, in contrast as a dramatic comedy, has outfits that are more fit for everyday life and dressing in more dark-toned outfits. I use both of these ideas in my life, sticking with darker colors but using bold patterns, houndstooth being my favorite, and more dramatic silhouettes, like with fuller skirts or distinct jackets. This all might seem complicated and overwhelming, but the process of finding your own fashion inspo isn’t so complex.
- First of all, you’re going to want to figure out exactly what you want to emulate. I recommend starting with a decade, silhouette, or style you’re really into so you can help narrow down your searches as you go on.
- Say you search for “alt,” that can encompass a lot of styles, but searching through different styles under that umbrella, like grunge or lolita, can guide you through everything that falls under alternative styles. Don’t hesitate to get specific!
- Don’t be afraid to look at the people around you for ideas either, whether it’s someone you saw in the hall or your closest friend, don’t be afraid to approach people and ask questions.
- Then you’ll want to find and gather these pictures together, whether you search on Pinterest or in magazines, it’s good to have all your inspiration together so you can see it all at once
- As you search, you might find some recurring people pop up, take note of them. If you find yourself particularly drawn to them, then congrats! You’ve found someone who is your fashion inspo! Follow them, look around their account, and you might find more people who dress similarly you can add to your inspiration!
- Last, you’ll want to find what’s most common in them, whether it be dark or bold colors, lots of layering, high or low-waisted pants, or interesting patterns, it’s good to find themes among these pictures so you can easily emulate the styles you like.
- Many people are into Y2K currently, which involves things like tracksuits, low-waisted silhouettes, and animal print.
At the end of the day, it’s very important to remember that there is no correct or incorrect way to dress, many stylists in the world like to think of style as a social language, each with their own set of rules and ideals, and no language is inherently wrong, just spoken differently.
