Congratulations Texans! We are officially halfway through September which, of course, means
that we are well into one of the most exciting and spirited times of the year: football season!
Amidst all the pep rallies, spirit weeks and school pride, Texan Times is here to give updates of
all the sports, including football, representing Ray this fall. If we fail to report your sport or you
have information about a meet or game, feel free to reach out to Avery Nisbet, our Sports Editor,
through Canvas and she’ll make sure that it gets mentioned in the next article. Without further
ado, here are some highlights of Ray Sports in the past 5 weeks:
- Tennis: While unfortunately, Ray Varsity Tennis lost all of their matches in the 1st meet against
TM on August 20th, they came back stronger than ever on September 3rd at Carroll and took
home the gold. They won all their matches and beat the Tigers in their home court! On
September 10th, the Texans, once again, dominated on the court and beat King 17 matches to
3. Nice going Tennis! Keep up the good work! - Cross-Country: Another great example of Texan endurance and hardwork is the Girls Varsity
Cross-Country team. In their first meet at Moody on August 10th, none of the girls placed on the
leaderboard. However, in their next meet on the 24th at Moody again, the entire team worked
hard and everyone ended up placing! Throughout the next few meets on August 30th,
September 7th and September 12th, at Flour Bluff, Port Aransas and the Islander Splash Meet
respectively, the team regularly had people placing in the Top 20! - Speech and Debate: While only having been to one tournament so far, Ray’s Speech and
Debate showed that they have come to win and are ready to become National Champions, once
again. On September 6th and 7th in La Vernia, Vera Hsiang won 4th in Original Oratory and
Daniel Lee, Saara Bindingnavele and Caelan Webster got 1st, 4th and 6th respectively in
Congress. The Speech and Debate team is also looking for volunteers to judge at the upcoming
tournament being hosted here at Ray on September 21st. You must be 18 or older and if you
are interested please contact Mr. Gardiner, Mr. Stroud, Kylie Thorpe or Kenedy Wood. - JV Football: This season, the Texan JV Football team continues to come through for Ray,
gaining two Texan victories in the process. In their first official game this season on August 29th
against Laredo Nixon, the JV Football team unfortunately lost 0-6. Nevertheless, they persisted
and won their second game against TM 22-13 on September 5th. They commanded the field
once again on the 12th and beat Kingsville 26-6. - Varsity Football: So far this season, the Varsity Football team has faced a large amount of adversity and continues to fight for a Ray victory. They lost 13-21 their first game against Laredo on August 30th, and also faced a crushing defeat from Tuloso-Midway on September 6th, losing 29-55. They also unfortunately got beat by Kingsville at their latest game on the 13th 26-50, however not all is lost. Throughout the game against Kingsville, Ray’s offense showed considerable skill, specifically in the 3rd quarter, and their potential as a team was revealed when quarterback Tripp Thompsan (#8) ran the ball to make an impressive touchdown while his teammates held back the defense. This allowed Ray to claim the lead, if briefly. In the upcoming games, we will see this offense continuing to make strides and score points for Ray.
Hopefully, we will also see an improvement in the team’s defense and Ray can claim a hard-earned victory. Go Texans!
