The Student Perspectives series is all about seeing how Ray High School students view their school! For these accounts, students are pulled aside at random and asked to answer questions about their high school experience. These interviews provide some student perspectives on the good, bad, and generally interesting aspects of their high school experience.
Student: Nathan Arias Jara
Grade: 11
Question: What does the average day look like for you?
“I enter the school, typically, at 7 AM and leave the school at 7 PM, typically.”
Arias Jara walked us through his schedule, mentioning that he had the “best English teacher in this world: Ruth Whitmore. Oh my god I just love that woman.”
Arias Jara mentioned how his day was changed by small factors, like walking to lunch with friends and always selecting the special off of the lunch menu.
He mentioned his pride in his academic achievements, for example how in IB Physics he “actually [has] over a hundred in that class. I’m the only one.”
Arias Jara also participates in numerous extracurricular activities. He plays tenor saxophone as a woodwind section leader in the RHS Band, he is the Vice president of Student Council, the debate captain of the RHS Speech and Debate Team, a Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society Participant and the self proclaimed “Biggest Mu Alpha Theta fan”. Also, he participates in the monthly Asian American Pacific Islander Club meetings, stating “I love asians. But not like that.” He participates in the Spanish Honor Society and thinks the president of the club is “the coolest person alive.”
Question: What is your favorite part of school?
“Doing my late assignments in the wrong… like, doing classwork for other subjects in the wrong class.”
Question: If you could change one thing about Ray High School, what would it be?
“I wish our building was like vets, like…I don’t want to live in a prison, you know?”
Question: If you could have the whole school know one thing about either you or Ray High School, what would it be?
“Why do you want to know stuff about me? That’s weird….Oh about Ray High School? We’re alright I guess.”
Question: Tell me an interesting or a boring fact about you.
“I like bread.”
