Between classes, schoolwork, and extracurriculars, most high school students are just trying to keep up. For junior Rachel Perez, a first-year student in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and a Texas All-State musician, managing a packed schedule presents unique challenges. On top of her academic and musical commitments, Perez also holds a part-time job at Marble Slab Creamery. Despite the demands, she’s found ways to overcome and excel in all her activities.

Perez’s motivation for choosing Marble Slab wasn’t solely financial; it had a deeper meaning to her. “I’ve been coming to this store for about six years now,” she explained. “I figured that a location that I’m already accustomed to would be best for a first job.”

She also loves ice cream, adding “I love this place — I love the ice cream that we sell,” making her a wonderful person to ask for flavor recommendations.

Still, working at an ice cream shop isn’t always as sweet as it sounds. “It’s very physically demanding, especially working at the end of a stressful week after you’ve been at school all day.” From scooping orders to prepping ingredients and helping customers, Perez stays busy during every shift.

Perez often finds herself juggling ice cream orders, preparing ingredients, and assisting customers constantly. But it’s the heart-warming moments that make the struggle worth it.

“It makes me really happy to see those kids and remember the times when I was their age,” she said, recalling her own childhood excitement at visiting Marble Slab.

Her time behind the counter has also brought a few surprises. “This person ordered the lemon custard ice cream with the Trix cereal, blueberries, vanilla wafers, brownies, and white chocolate chips,” she recalled with a laugh. “I thought that there was no way that this would taste good. Surprisingly it did.”

Balancing IB coursework, music rehearsals, and a job takes planning. Perez recommends staying ahead. “Just make a schedule and do your homework the night before,” she advised. With demanding classes like IB English and Math, preparation is key.

Her job has also taught her lessons beyond time management. “A lot of people will be rude to you regardless of how nice you meet or greet them,” she explained. “Working here has really taught me to not take negative comments personally and to be more understanding.”

Perez’s story reflects the reality of many high-achieving students who find ways to balance all aspects of their lives. For those considering part-time work, she offers encouragement. “If you think you can, I definitely recommend getting a part-time job,” she said. “You can learn so many things from a part-time job and make some extra money.”

Whether she’s playing the flute or serving up scoops, Perez proves that with a little planning and a lot of heart, it’s possible to do it all.
