Many students have differing opinions on what makes a teacher truly great. But, one educator who seems to receive near universal praise is Baker’s Texas History teacher, Mrs. Smith.
As she plans to retire on January 31st, this news has been met with sorrow and understanding. Many students at Ray, especially IB students who took her class in middle school, have expressed their sadness.
However, they also recognize this decision is for the best and are glad it will give her more time to focus on her health.
On January 17th, Mrs. Smith announced that she is retiring to her 7th graders during design class and this announcement was met with emotional reactions from students who were heartbroken by the news, with many of them in tears.
Later on January 18th Mrs. Smith posted on her Instagram, ‘smith.cissy’ about her retirement where former students had similar reactions.
While it is sad that a great teacher like Mrs. Smith is retiring, it is unfortunately for the best, considering recent problems with her health. Last December, when Mrs. Smith took her mammogram, her results showed a tumor near the area she had cancer in 10 years ago.
Given the seriousness of this health scare, it is understandable Mrs. Smith has chosen to retire so she can focus on her health. Fortunately, both tumors are noncancerous and pose no danger to her.
Though Mrs. Smith’s retirement is still bittersweet, we’re glad that she’s cancer-free and can take more time to focus on herself.
